TURE
Jakari Young’s story begins on a crisp December morning in 1977, in the heart of Baltimore, Maryland. Born to a family where love was abundant but life was not without its challenges, Jakari grew up as an only child until his teenage years when three step-siblings joined his world. This shift not only taught him adaptability but also instilled an early understanding of leadership, as he found himself navigating the dynamics of a blended family.
Music, faith, and discipline played pivotal roles in Jakari's formative years. By 1997, his passion for rhythm found an outlet as a tenor drummer for the Marching Wildcats at Bethune-Cookman University. The experience taught him the power of harmony—not just in music but in life. Balancing drumline rehearsals with a part-time job at Olive Garden showcased his dedication and drive, traits that would define his future.
After earning his Bachelor’s in Criminal Justice, Jakari pursued a Master’s degree, solidifying his foundation in the field he would soon dominate. In 2001, armed with education and ambition, he joined the Daytona Beach Police Department as a rookie officer. "I wasn’t sure where my path would lead," Jakari recalls, "but I knew I wanted to make an impact."
Over the next two decades, he rose through the ranks, fueled by resilience and a commitment to learning. Along the way, he faced challenges, none more profound than the loss of his father in 2020. "He was my confidant and guide," Jakari shares. "His passing reminded me to cherish every moment and prioritize family above all else." This philosophy became a cornerstone of his leadership style.

Life is a journey that is full of ebbs and flows that are reflected in moments of triumph and moments of challenge.
In 2021, Jakari was appointed the 17th Chief of Police for Daytona Beach, a role demanding both strategy and compassion. Responsible for 350 employees and the safety of 78,000 residents, Jakari has consistently prioritized community engagement. Programs like National Night Out and Shop with a Cop reflect his belief that trust is the foundation of effective policing.
Despite his demanding career, Jakari remains a devoted family man. Married for nearly 19 years, he treasures time with his wife and three children. A Florida State Football fanatic and occasional fisherman, he balances life’s responsibilities with personal joys.
At the heart of Jakari’s journey is his faith. Guided by Proverbs 3:5-6, he sees every challenge as an opportunity to trust in God’s plan. "Leadership is uncomfortable," he says, "but discomfort is where growth happens."
Jakari Young’s legacy is more than his titles or achievements—it’s his unwavering commitment to faith, family, and community. His journey from a marching band drummer to Daytona Beach’s Chief of Police is a testament to resilience, proving that with purpose and perseverance, the possibilities are endless.
