Born on a summer day in 1956 in Daytona Beach, Florida, William J. Anderson’s life began in the embrace of a loving, faith-driven household. Adopted at just three months old by Jesse and Josephine Anderson, he grew up with his sister Andrea in a home that valued integrity and hard work. His mother, a homemaker and Christian evangelist, imbued the family with a sense of purpose and spirituality, amplified by her radio ministry. This grounding in faith and discipline would shape William’s journey through triumphs and challenges alike.
William’s childhood memories paint a vivid picture of Daytona Beach in the 1960s—a bustling community marked by family outings, school band practices, and the rhythms of small-town life. From his formative years at Mainland High School, where he graduated in 1974, he carried an early sense of discipline and leadership. Encouraged by his parents’ unwavering support, William began to imagine a future where service and community stood at the forefront.
Inspired by his upbringing, William pursued higher education at Daytona Beach Community College, followed by Bethune-Cookman University, where he earned his B.S. in Criminal Justice in 1998. His academic achievements were paired with a deep commitment to public service, leading him to a 40-year career in law enforcement. From his early days with the Daytona Beach Police Department to his groundbreaking roles as the first Black Chief of Police in three cities, William’s path was one of resilience and determination.
As Chief of Police in DeLand, Elizabeth City, Greenville, and Asheville, William broke racial barriers while fostering trust and fairness within his teams and communities. His tenure was marked by challenges unique to a Black leader in predominantly white environments, yet he navigated these with grace, guided by his core values of faith, integrity, and perseverance. He worked tirelessly to uplift others, setting a standard for what it means to lead with courage and empathy.
William’s dedication extended beyond his badge. As a member of the United States Coast Guard Reserves for over a decade, he served his country with distinction. His work with organizations such as the NAACP and Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., showcased his commitment to uplifting underserved communities and championing civil rights.

My personal values are faith, honesty, integrity along with the core values of Omega: Manhood, Scholarship, Perseverance and Uplift.
Retirement offered William a chance to explore passions that had long been set aside. Picking up the tuba after decades away, he rediscovered the joy of music, performing with the Volusia Community Arts Symphony and the Daytona Beach Concert Band. His return to music was not just a personal revival but also a reflection of his lifelong philosophy: it’s never too late to pursue the things that bring joy and fulfillment.
Throughout his career, William faced the dual challenge of being a trailblazer and a role model. From the scrutiny of his decisions to the unrelenting pressure of leadership, he learned the value of patience and the power of leading by example. His story became a beacon for young people, especially within Black communities, proving that resilience and righteousness could pave the way for lasting impact.
At the heart of William’s life is his family. With his wife Sandra, son Chad, and grandchildren Blake, Harper, and Elias, he finds his greatest joys. Whether cheering at sporting events or fishing by the water, these moments of connection remind him of the enduring strength found in love and togetherness.
As a Deacon at Greater Union First Baptist Church and a leader in numerous community initiatives, William remains a steadfast servant of God and his neighbors. His life’s work embodies his guiding principle: to serve with honesty, integrity, and a commitment to uplifting others.
From his days racing go-karts across the Southeast to leading cities as a trailblazing Chief of Police, William J. Anderson has lived a life of relentless forward motion. His story is one of perseverance, faith, and an unyielding dedication to making the world a better place. Now, in retirement, he continues to inspire those around him, proving that a life lived in service of others is a life well-lived.
