Brea Jones has always understood the power of storytelling. Whether through the written word, a photograph, or a brushstroke, she has built her career around sharing narratives that matter. Born on February 15, 1999, in Jacksonville, Florida, Brea was raised in a home filled with love, support, and rich family connections. Her parents, steadfast and loving, ensured that she grew up with the right values and an understanding of the importance of education, community, and faith. Together with her sister, she was nurtured by her grandparents and great-grandparents, who played an essential role in her upbringing. They instilled in her the belief that knowledge and creativity are keys to unlocking a better future.
At the age of seven, Brea's family moved to Sanford, where she experienced an idyllic childhood, surrounded by sprawling green fields and animals—including a pet cow. The move, driven by the desire to provide better educational opportunities, turned out to be a pivotal moment in Brea's life. It was here that she learned the importance of community ties, connection to the land, and the stories that define each place. Growing up in the embrace of her extended family, Brea developed a deep sense of responsibility for those around her and an unwavering appreciation for the history of her surroundings.
Brea's academic journey was as distinguished as her childhood. After excelling in her studies, she chose to pursue a career in journalism, knowing that this path would allow her to give voice to the stories of others. Graduating with a degree in journalism from Florida International University (FIU), Brea set out to make her mark. Her early career began with her work as a reporter at FactCheck.org at the University of Pennsylvania, where she played an integral role in combating misinformation in health and politics. She understood that accurate information was vital, especially when so many stories were being distorted or misrepresented. She went on to write for several respected publications, including the South Florida Media Network and the Miami Times, covering everything from entertainment to politics to health.
Brea's dedication to journalism is matched only by her passion for art. She has always found solace in the creative process—whether capturing life through her camera lens or experimenting with various art forms. This creative outlet led her to an internship at The Wolfsonian-FIU, where she honed her storytelling skills through the visual arts. Her work caught the attention of the art world when she participated in the 2023 Miami Art Basel—Spectrum Miami show. The opening night saw two of her works sold, a testament to her growing reputation as both an artist and a storyteller.
Throughout her career, Brea has remained steadfast in her commitment to her community. She has volunteered with the Georgetown Steering Team for over three years, helping preserve the history of the historically Black neighborhood in Sanford, a place she holds dear. Through her work with this organization, she has spearheaded events like the Florida Emancipation Weekend Celebration, bringing together local businesses, nonprofits, and individuals to celebrate and share the history of Black Florida. Her leadership skills and dedication have left a lasting impact on both the community and her personal growth.
Always plan ahead, listen more than you speak, organization is key, try to have a self-care day once a week, admit to your faults, be adaptable in your career and willing to change for the chance at growth.
While Brea has achieved remarkable success, it hasn’t come without its struggles. The competitive world of journalism, especially in the aftermath of COVID-19, left her feeling undervalued at times. Despite her extensive experience and undeniable talent, there were moments when she questioned her path. But Brea’s faith—both in herself and in God—kept her going. She believes that the trials she faced were part of a greater test, one that helped her grow stronger, more resilient, and more determined to succeed.
Today, Brea is thriving as a reporter for The Villages Daily Sun, where she covers the surrounding communities with a deep focus on storytelling that reflects the richness and diversity of the area. She is driven by a personal mission to amplify the voices of historically Black communities, many of which are close to her heart. Whether through her journalistic work, her art, or her community involvement, Brea is using her gifts to give back and make a lasting impact.
Looking to the future, Brea is determined to continue her work as a journalist while further cultivating her artistic talents. She aspires to use her platform to shine a light on the stories that matter most—stories of resilience, hope, and change. She believes that every community has its own unique narrative, and it is her calling to ensure that these stories are told with authenticity and care.
Through all of her successes, challenges, and passions, Brea remains grounded in the values that have guided her since childhood: faith, organization, and adaptability. She holds firmly to the belief that planning ahead, listening more than speaking, and staying open to growth are key to both personal and professional success. Despite the challenges of her career and life, she never forgets the importance of self-care, humility, and maintaining a strong connection to the people and stories that have shaped her journey.
In her quiet moments, Brea reflects on the path she’s walked—from the green fields of Sanford to the bustling art shows and journalism conferences of today. She knows that her story is far from finished. She is, after all, just beginning to tell the most important chapters yet.
