Brushstrokes and Flight Paths: Delia Miller

In the heart of Central Florida, where the vibrant landscapes of Apopka meet the buzzing energy of Orlando, Delia Miller’s roots run deep. Born on August 26, 2003, to parents with strong cultural ties—her mother from Belize and her father from Jamaica—Delia’s family tree stretches wide across the United States, populated by a myriad of aunts, uncles, cousins, and siblings. As the youngest of four sisters, Delia jokes that she’s the baby of the family, but anyone who’s seen her command a room would know that this title is as much a blessing as it is a challenge.
From a young age, Delia was surrounded by creativity and nature. Raised in one of the most diverse ecosystems of the country, she developed a keen interest in both the environment and artistic expression. Her childhood was nothing short of adventurous, often spent exploring the woods and wetlands of her hometown. Her family’s backyard was a living, breathing canvas. A koi fish pond and aviary, both hand-built by her father, were home to dozens of birds, while reptiles like a ball python, chameleon, and geckos also made their way into the mix. These experiences not only sparked her imagination but grounded her in a profound respect for nature.
Delia’s passion for art began to take root during her early school years. As she moved through elementary, middle, and high school, her interests expanded to include a variety of mediums, from sports to science, but it was the world of visual art that called to her most. Her talent was undeniable. By the time she graduated from Apopka High School in 2021, Delia had earned a place among the top 10% of her class. She was driven by a vision, even as she had to navigate the expectations of a family with a legacy in the medical field. Choosing to pursue art and aviation—two fields that were completely foreign to her family—was not easy. But the pushback only strengthened her resolve, leading her to carve a path all her own.
Today, Delia is an undergraduate student at the University of Florida, studying Digital Arts and Sciences through their online program while living in Orlando. But perhaps what’s even more remarkable is her work as a mural artist. She’s become a fixture in the Central Florida art scene, known for murals that reflect both the natural world and her rich cultural heritage. Her pieces are not just images on walls; they are stories, narratives that connect communities and individuals to their past, present, and future. Her work includes large-scale projects like the towering mural in Downtown Orlando, which honors the legacy of the Parramore community—a historically Black neighborhood—and its key figures who supported each other through segregation.
Delia’s artistic journey has also led her to establish her own mural painting business, where she’s painted murals for notable clients like Orlando Executive Airport, Walmart, and Orlando City Soccer. Her business has blossomed, and her commitment to community is evident in her leadership of local mural initiatives that involve students and youth. These murals are more than public art; they’re an invitation to see the world differently, to transform spaces and perspectives.
Be a little delusional. Go after goals and projects you think may be out of your reach.
But Delia’s aspirations don’t stop at art. As a student pilot at the Orlando Executive Airport, she’s working toward earning her commercial pilot’s license. Her passion for aviation runs parallel to her love for painting, and she envisions a future where both can coexist. One day, she hopes to take her murals to the skies, painting the world from above, quite literally.
Through it all, Delia has remained grounded in her values. She believes in the power of being a little delusional—that is, chasing dreams that seem out of reach, no matter how impossible they might appear. It’s this mindset that allowed her to push through the challenges of carving a niche in two fields that were far from traditional in her family. Today, Delia’s parents, once hesitant, are now her biggest supporters, cheering her on through each mural and flight lesson.
As a community leader, Delia dedicates much of her time to volunteering. She works with ArtReach Orlando, where she helps youth explore their creative potential through art, providing them with a safe space to express themselves and discover their voices. She also gives back to her community by volunteering with local groups that assist unhoused individuals, offering meals, showers, and other resources to those in need. Delia’s commitment to making the world a better place, both through her art and her service, has become a cornerstone of her life.
Looking to the future, Delia has big dreams. She hopes to one day paint a mural in another country, sharing her vision with the world beyond Florida’s borders. And while she continues to perfect her craft as a muralist, she’ll also be flying toward new heights as a commercial airline pilot, where her two passions—art and aviation—will soar together.
Delia’s story is one of resilience, creativity, and boundless possibility. It’s a story of someone who, in the face of uncertainty, chose to embrace the unknown and take flight—literally and figuratively. With every stroke of paint and every turn of the propeller, Delia Miller is painting the sky and the world below it with color, purpose, and an unwavering belief in herself.
