Reigning in Purpose: Deon Myers

TURE

Born and raised amidst the bustling vibrancy of Miami, Florida, Deon Myers’ early life was a paradox of challenge and promise. Growing up in a neighborhood marked by gang violence, Deon could have easily become another statistic. But her athleticism and determination shielded her from the chaos. Fueled by resilience and the unwavering love of her family, she poured her energy into sports, earning multiple scholarships to the University of Central Florida. There, she competed on the Women’s Track and Field Team, proving that her path was not dictated by circumstance but by choice and grit.

Childhood summers were a mosaic of joy and discovery for Deon. Each year, her neighbors from Jamaica would visit, infusing her Miami block with their vibrant culture, athletic prowess, and academic excellence. Whether it was kickball in the heat of the afternoon, hopscotch on the chalk-streaked sidewalks, or competitive rounds of double dutch, these moments left an indelible mark. They taught Deon the value of community, the beauty of learning from others, and the importance of embracing differences.

Deon’s journey wasn’t without its hurdles. In upper elementary school, the cruel nickname “blacky” was hurled at her, attempting to tarnish her self-esteem. For a moment, the weight of those words threatened to define her. But the counterbalance of genuine compliments—“Your skin is gorgeous,” “You are so beautiful”—shifted her perspective. It was in this tension that Deon learned to love the rich melanin she was blessed with, transforming pain into empowerment and inspiring a lifelong mission to help others embrace their worth.

After earning her bachelor’s degree in Exceptional Student Education in 2006, Deon’s passion for education and community-building took flight. She became a certified educator with expertise in exceptional student education, elementary education, reading, and ESOL. Her calling expanded when she and her husband, Kevin Myers, founded Reign Academy School of Entrepreneurship in Ormond Beach. For over 14 years, they’ve shaped a generation of thinkers and leaders, offering not just education but mentorship, community, and a foundation of faith.

I hope to remember all that the Lord has provided for me and continue to be grateful for the many blessings that came with my life.

At Reign Academy, learning goes beyond the classroom. Deon and Kevin instill in their students the value of service through monthly outreach programs. From organizing drives for women’s shelters to performing for nursing home residents, the school is a living testament to the belief that education is most powerful when paired with compassion. Deon’s leadership as Headmistress and High School Learning Coach reflects her unwavering commitment to raising servant-leaders who will leave an indelible mark on the world.

Looking to the future, Deon envisions even greater impact. Her dream is to develop a reading curriculum and supplemental books that empower mastery in literacy. She also plans to franchise Reign Academy, ensuring its reach extends far beyond Ormond Beach. Through these endeavors, she aims to provide students nationwide with the tools to succeed, both academically and spiritually, while equipping them to make meaningful contributions to their communities.

For Deon Myers, life is about loving God and loving people with authenticity and intention. Married for 20 years to her “amazing husband, life, ministry, and business partner” Kevin, and mother to two bright young adults, KJ and Tamar, her life is a testament to faith, perseverance, and purpose. From her Miami roots to the hallways of Reign Academy, Deon has dedicated her journey to inspiring others to embrace their own stories, live boldly, and walk in purpose.
