Standing in the Gap: Terri Yearby

FEA

TURE

Terri Yearby’s journey from a farm-like childhood in Daytona Beach, Florida, to founding a nonprofit that transforms lives, is a testament to resilience, grace, and purpose. Born on October 25, 1974, as the second eldest of four siblings, Terri’s formative years were filled with lessons of humility and abundance. Raised with goats, chickens, and a thriving garden, her family’s resourcefulness instilled in her a deep appreciation for hard work and community. What she once thought was a mark of poverty—meals sourced from their own backyard—later revealed itself as a symbol of richness in love, connection, and self-sufficiency.

Terri's academic journey was equally remarkable. Armed with degrees in Health Information Technology and Supervision & Management from Daytona State College, she carved a path of excellence. Today, she serves as an Administrative Staff Assistant in Volusia County’s Coastal Division, where she supports vital programs with diligence and care. Yet her true calling lies beyond her professional title—it’s in her heartfelt dedication to serving others through her nonprofit, Standing in the Gap Ministries Daytona Inc.

Founded in 2014, Standing in the Gap embodies Terri’s passion for uplifting underserved communities. From feeding the homeless through “First Friday Feedings” to hosting school drives for children affected by domestic violence, her organization has become a beacon of hope. Terri's personal struggles—surviving molestation, sexual assault, domestic violence, homelessness, and breast cancer—became the crucible through which her nonprofit was born. “I wanted to be the person I never had,” she shares, “someone standing in the gap for those who cannot stand for themselves.”

Terri’s indomitable spirit is fueled by her two children, Jamyn J’nae, 22, and Dayjon Leo, 13. They are her inspiration and joy, often standing by her side as she carries out her mission. Her son’s lighthearted banter about her quirks, including her shyness, underscores the warmth and authenticity of their bond. Despite her extensive community outreach, Terri admits she often feels tongue-tied in social settings—a surprising trait for someone who inspires so many.

Live, love and laugh in every moment of your life.

Beyond her nonprofit work, Terri dreams of expanding her impact by pursuing a Master’s in Public Administration and Nonprofit Management. Her vision includes a brick-and-mortar community center and a government contract to amplify her services. “I want to create a space where healing and empowerment are accessible to all,” she explains, her voice steady with conviction.

Her guiding philosophy, rooted in Romans 8:37—“In all these things, we are more than conquerors”—has carried her through life’s most challenging moments. Whether facing societal stigmas or personal setbacks, Terri’s faith has been her anchor. She emphasizes the importance of embracing life’s highs and lows, knowing that every experience contributes to a greater purpose.

Terri’s story is one of transformation, a journey from pain to purpose. Her nonprofit not only feeds and clothes the disadvantaged but also restores dignity and hope to those society often overlooks. “There is a purpose in the pains we experience,” she reflects. “No one is exempt, but we are all created to excel beyond them.”

As Terri approaches her 50th birthday, she remains a symbol of strength and compassion. Her laughter echoes in the lives she’s touched, her legacy built on love, perseverance, and an unwavering belief in the power of community. “Continue to grow in grace and walk in your greatness,” she says—a mantra for herself and a gift to all who hear her story.
